Tarique Rahman is the main hero of the July Movement: Amir Khasru
Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the party’s national standing committee, has said that the main hero of the movement is BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman. He made this comment at a rally in Chittagong on Saturday evening, saying that the leaders and activists of all the constituent organizations including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jubo Dal, Sramik Dal, Chhatra Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal played the biggest role in the July-August movement. Begum Khaleda Zia played the biggest role in this movement.
Tarique Rahman is the main hero of the July Movement: Amir Khasru
The rally was organized by the Bangladesh Sammilit Peshajibi Parishad, Chittagong branch at the city’s GEC Convention Hall. Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury spoke as the chief guest. He said, “We do not want to show this movement as the achievement of BNP. The people of the country united in this movement. Through this, the fascist government has fallen. We have never said that BNP has the most claim to the achievement. Tarique Rahman did not say this either. Because, we do not want to divide the movement. We have called this a movement of 180 million people in Bangladesh.’ Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, BNP leaders and activists have been subjected to torture for 16 years. They could not stay at home. They could not do business. The families of leaders and activists have been destroyed. Therefore, we will have and must have interest and enthusiasm for July-August. This is the end of a long movement. The end will always be in the minds of the people. But the contributions of those who have protested and been subjected to torture before must also be remembered.
The political culture of the country must be changed, this former commerce minister commented, saying, Tarique Rahman is talking about tolerance in politics. He is basically talking about tolerance to change the political culture of Bangladesh. He is talking about respecting the opinions of others even if they have different opinions. Because, if the political culture does not change, the future of the country will not change even if reforms are carried out. To build a country, changes must be made in the political culture. I also tell our leaders and workers to be tolerant.’
‘You too go to the people’
The main speaker of the gathering was BNP National Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain. He said that those who point fingers at BNP, point fingers at martyr President Ziaur Rahman’s party, and speak out of jealousy towards Tarique Rahman’s leadership should look at their own faces in the mirror. Try to understand whether the people are around you or not.
AZM Zahid Hossain said, ‘Every word of reform is written in 31 points. We are going to the people with 31 points. You too should go to the people with your program. Why do you talk nonsense? Why are you trying to assassinate their character? Go to the people.’
‘Wasim Akram is the first martyr’
In his speech as a special guest at the gathering, City Mayor Shahadat Hossain said that it is being said that the fascist government fell in 36 days. However, BNP leaders and workers have given blood for 16 years. The leaders and activists of BNP, Chhatra Dal, and Jubo Dal were present in the largest number during the 36-day movement. Shaheed Mohammad Wasim Akram was a member of the convening committee of Chittagong College Chhatra Dal. He was martyred on July 16 last year. He sent me a picture from Muradpur while protesting that day. 10 minutes after sending the picture, the news came that Wasim had been shot. Wasim Akram is the first martyr in Bangladesh. Although we do not say that. If we look at the time of death, we will understand that Wasim died between 4:30 and 5 pm. On the other hand, Abu Sayeed died at night.’
The gathering was presided over by Zahidul Karim, convener of Sammilit Peshajibi Parishad Chittagong.
